Adult Students

While UW–Madison is in many ways geared toward the traditional-aged student, the university welcomes adults who are returning to learning. For admission purposes, UW–Madison defines adult students as students 25 years of age and older.

An applicant who did not attend college after high school graduation is considered a new freshman regardless of age. An applicant who attended college beyond the high school level (at a community college or another university) is considered a transfer student. Someone who was previously enrolled at UW–Madison as an undergraduate but did not complete a degree is considered a reentry student.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions for degree-seeking adults to find the answers to many of your admission-related questions.

Students who wish to take courses at UW–Madison but are not pursuing a degree should direct their questions to the Adult and Student Services Center.
