Campus Life
Student life at Wisconsin is so much more than books, study sessions, and exams. Some of your most important college experiences and learning opportunities will take place out of the classroom.
Wisconsin Union
Union Terrace
The two locations that make up the Wisconsin Union provide the centers of student life on campus. The historic Memorial Union, on the shore of Lake Mendota, is home to the famed Union Terrace. Union South, located right across from Camp Randall Stadium, is the student gathering spot for the southern part of campus. Between the two, you'll find computer labs, live music, shops, movies, study lounges, a craft shop, art galleries, game rooms, a travel center, and close to 10 restaurants.
Student Organizations
Joining one of our 700 student organizations is a great way to get involved on campus, make friends, and develop your leadership skills. Whether you love to dance, debate, play sports, write poetry, volunteer, sail, or campaign, there's a group for you. And if you don't find the organization that captures your interest, you can start your own. It's really that easy.
Badger Athletics
Bucky Badger
For some, the essence of the University of Wisconsin is Big Ten athletics and Bucky Badger. There are 23 varsity sports on campus—11 for men and 12 for women. Whether you're competing or cheering from the stands at legendary venues such as Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl Center, you'll quickly discover that every year is a great year to be a Badger.
Arts and Culture
Wisconsin appreciates the arts—film, music, dance, theatre, writing, and the visual arts. You'll find it all on campus, every day. We have 13 museums and galleries, 5 theatres, and 5 concert halls. There are more than 1,500 performing arts events on campus each year. Artists, speakers, politicians, and writers regularly visit the university. The city of Madison supplements the campus arts offerings with a variety of events and venues, most notably the new Overture Center.
Multicultural Student Center
The Multicultural Student Center (MSC) is where the university community comes together to learn about and appreciate various cultures. It's also a place where students can study, relax, hold meetings, and attend lectures and cultural celebrations. Nine of Wisconsin's multicultural student organizations are housed in the MSC.
Greek Life
For almost 150 years, Wisconsin's fraternities and sororities have connected students through the ideals of friendship, citizenship, scholarship, and leadership. Our more than 49 chapters boast excellent academic records and raise thousands of dollars for charity, while providing a smaller community for fun and friendship. Approximately 10 percent of UW students participate in Greek Life.
Recreation and Fitness
Hoofer Sailing Club
Our recreational facilities are state-of-the art and the Division of Recreational Sports offers innovative programs and opportunities for active involvement. Your student ID card gets you free access to our four indoor recreational facilities, 2 swimming pools, and 63 acres of outdoor recreational fields. You can choose from more than 100 group fitness classes per week, become a member of one of our 35 club teams, or participate in 30 different intramural sports. And you can join Hoofers, one of the premier collegiate outdoor recreational programs in the country.
UW Campus
Bascom Hall
Wisconsin is recognized as one of America's great college campuses. It covers 933 rolling, wooded, shore-lined acres and sits between two lakes-Mendota and Monona. You'll find red brick and limestone buildings, museums, historic landmarks, high-technology centers, state-of-the-art recreational facilities, an arboretum, the famed Wisconsin Union Terrace, and, because this is Wisconsin, a dairy barn.
City of Madison
It's hard to image a better location for a major university. Our students benefit from both the campus community and Madison itself, since it's all right at their doorsteps. With a population of 220,000, Madison offers the ideal combination of natural beauty, stimulating cultural offerings, outdoor recreation, distinctive restaurants, unique shops, and vibrant nightlife. It tops many "best" lists: best place to live and work, best college sports town, one of America's safest cities, a top American dream town, and a top green city.
