For some, the essence of the University of Wisconsin is Big Ten Badger athletics and Bucky Badger. There are 23 varsity sports on campus—11 for men and 12 for women. Whether you’re competing or cheering from the stands at legendary venues such as Camp Randall Stadium and the Kohl Center, you’ll quickly discover that every year is a great year to be a Badger.
Our recreational facilities are state-of-the-art and the Division of Recreational Sports offers innovative programs and opportunities for active involvement. Your student ID card gets you free access to our indoor recreational facilities, two swimming pools, and 63 acres of outdoor recreational fields. You can choose from more than 100 group fitness classes per week, become a member of one of our 35 club teams, or participate in 40 different intramural sports.
Established in 1931, Hoofers is one of the premier collegiate outdoor recreational programs in the country. Ask Hoofers and they will tell you that some of their most memorable and prized college memories are of Hoofers experiences. There are six clubs in Hoofers: mountaineering, outing, riding, sailing, scuba, and ski and snowboard.
The 2008–09 season was another great one for the Badgers. Our women’s hockey won the NCAA championship for the third time in four years, and it was the fourth straight year they were in the championship game. For the tenth consecutive year, the men’s cross-country won the Big Ten Championships. The lightweight rowing team won its second consecutive title, making it their fifth win in six years. In football, the Badgers won their seventh consecutive bowl game, the longest streak in school history.
