Majors

All students are initially admitted into the university and not into specific programs and majors. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission into a specific major program or college. In all cases, admission to intended majors is a separate procedure, application, and/or review process. Most programs have additional GPA, prerequisite course work, and/or audition or portfolio requirements. To learn more about the admission expectations, requirements, and procedures for the major of interest to you, consult UW–Madison’s Entrance Requirements for Undergraduate Majors.

Transfer students interested in professional programs in the Schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Pharmacy are required to apply for admission to those programs. You may be eligible to apply to a professional program when you apply to the university if you have met that program’s course prerequisites. Please consult our school and college Web sites (see links below) for course prerequisites, GPA requirements, and application procedures and deadlines.

Undecided About Your Major?

Students who are undecided regarding a major should utilize the resources offered by the Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS). CCAS provides academic advising to all undecided students and specializes in helping undecided students explore their interests and discover their major.
