I-20 Frequently Asked Questions

If you are studying outside of the US and don't have an F-1 visa yet:

You will need to submit the following items to our office. More information about these items can be found on your visa checklist in your Student Center at MyUW, as well as on your Admitted Student Checklist (item #4).

If you are studying inside the US and already have an F-1 visa:

Furthermore, your will need to inform your current institution of your intent to study at UW–Madison and have your SEVIS record transferred. To facilitate the transfer, you will need to submit page 3 of the Student Visa Information and Mailing Form to your international student advisor at the institution you are attending/attended prior to UW–Madison. Please note that we are not able to issue your new I-20 before your SEVIS release date. The date is usually on or around your last day of classes of your current term.

The fastest way to submit I-20 documents is via email to onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu as either .pdf or .jpg attachments.

If you are studying outside of the US and don't have an F-1 visa yet:

After receipt of all required documents, it takes about 2–3 weeks for your I-20 to be processed before it is shipped. Shipping via courier takes about 5–7 days, and standard air mail may take up to 2–4 weeks.

If you are studying inside the US and already have an F-1 visa:

Please note that our office is not able to issue your I-20 before your SEVIS release date. After receipt of all required documents, it takes about 2–3 weeks for your I-20 to be processed before it is shipped. Shipping via courier takes about 5–7 days, and standard air mail may take up to 2–4 weeks.

eShipGlobal (UEMS) is a website that allows you to select a courier service to have your I-20 mailed to you. It notifies you when your I-20 has shipped, and you can track the document online. Documents sent through the courier service typically take less than a week to arrive. Please note that you will need to pay for this service.

Standard airmail means that your I-20 is shipped through the regular postal mail. Delivery times may range between 2–4 weeks. There is no tracking information and no guarantee of delivery.

Yes, but only if your I-20 hasn't shipped yet.

If you want to switch to courier shipping, simply put in a request through the eShipGlobal (UEMS) website. Our office will be notified automatically of your request.

If you want to switch to regular postal mail, please email onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu with your request and address information. You will need to contact eShipGlobal (UEMS) directly to have your courier shipment canceled and receive a refund.

Yes, but only if your I-20 hasn't shipped yet.

If you selected courier shipping, you will need to put in a new shipping request through eShipGlobal (UEMS) and contact them to have your previous shipment canceled and receive a refund.

If you selected regular postal mail, please email onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu with your request and address information.

We must wait four full weeks for delivery. If you still have not received your I-20 four weeks after shipping, we will issue another one. However, we strongly encourage you to have it shipped via courier this time. Please put in a request through the eShipGlobal (UEMS) website. Our office will be notified automatically of your request.

Make sure that all required items on your visa checklist in your Student Center at MyUW are marked as “received”. Also, check your wisc.edu email account for any correspondence regarding any missing/required items. Lastly, make sure that you have accepted your offer of admission and paid the enrollment deposit.

Yes, if you are already in the US studying on an F-1 visa, you may pick up your I-20 at our office. Please indicate "pick-up" on the Student Visa Information and Mailing Form or email onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu with your request.

Yes, we can ship your I-20 directly to your home country. However, we strongly suggest shipping it via eShipGlobal (UEMS). Please note that you will need to pay for this service.

Although not required, you may submit your documents prior to being admitted. Please make sure to submit all required documents and review the information in item #4 of your Admitted Student Checklist.

If you are worried about receiving your I-20 in time, please email onwisconsin@admissions.wisc.edu and explain your situation.

If you were enrolled for classes during at least part of the semester immediately preceding your return, you do not need to reapply. ISS will issue your I-20.

If you were not enrolled at all for one semester or more, you will need to reapply. The Office of Admissions and Recruitment will issue your I-20.
