Ethical Practice

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). The cornerstone of NACAC is ethical college admission and NACAC strives to ensure appropriate conduct among professionals in the recruitment of students and their transition to postsecondary education.

This code of conduct is known today as the Statement of Principles of Good Practice (SPGP). It is the responsibility of our program to educate and hold our volunteers to these standards.

Statement of Principles of Good Practice

i. All Members – Mandatory Practices

  1. Promotion and Recruitment
    All members agree that they will:
    1. accurately represent and promote their schools, institutions, organizations, and services;
    2. not use disparaging comparisons of secondary or postsecondary institutions;
    3. not offer or accept any reward or remuneration from a secondary school, college, university, agency, or organization for placement or recruitment of students in the United States. Members who choose to use incentive-based agents when recruiting students outside the US will ensure accountability, transparency, and integrity;
    4. be responsible for compliance with applicable laws and regulations with respect to the students' rights to privacy.

Note: Some volunteers have been asked to discontinue their participation with our program due to violation of NACAC guidelines.

Executive Order 54

As a UW-Madison volunteer expected to have regular contact with minors, you're expected by Executive Order 54 (EO 54) and campus policy to immediately report child abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services (CPS) or law enforcement. This role is known as a Mandated Reporter. Along with employees of the Office of Admissions and Recruitment, our Alumni Admissions Volunteers are considered Mandated Reporters.

EO 54 applies to all Alumni Admissions Volunteers regardless of where they reside. EO 54 is applicable only during volunteer hours.

If you observe or learn of child abuse or neglect while serving in your volunteer role and you believe the individual is not in immediate danger, please contact the UW-Madison Police Department at 608-264-2677. If you believe an individual to be in immediate danger, please contact your local authorities as appropriate.
